Comparison
Salamandr vs Zendesk
Enterprise-grade ticketing vs. a helpdesk you can actually self-host
Zendesk is the default enterprise choice — deep, mature, and backed by a huge app marketplace. It's also cloud-only: every ticket, attachment and customer record lives on Zendesk's infrastructure, under Zendesk's terms, for as long as you're a customer.
| Feature | Salamandr | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted deployment | Yes — Docker Compose, Swarm or Kubernetes | No, cloud-only |
| Source code | AGPL-3.0, fully open (Community edition) | Closed source |
| Data residency | Your infrastructure, your choice of region | Zendesk's cloud, regional options on higher tiers |
| Telemetry / phone-home | None. Enterprise licenses verify offline. | Not applicable — it's a hosted product |
| Entry pricing | Free self-hosted up to 5 agents, banded seat tiers (10/25/50) under Enterprise | Per-agent SaaS, enterprise tiers priced well above SMB plans |
| Native channels | Email, web chat, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Messenger, Line, portal | Broad, mostly via first-party channels and app marketplace |
| Third-party integrations | Sandboxed WASM plugin SDK (Rust/AssemblyScript), self-authored or community | Large, mature app marketplace |
| Meta integrations (Instagram/Messenger) | Bring your own Meta App — your credentials, your rate limits | Routed through Zendesk's own app |
Where Zendesk wins on paper
Zendesk’s app marketplace and integration breadth are the product of a decade of ecosystem investment — if you need an off-the-shelf integration for something niche, it more often already exists there. Its AI features and workflow automation are also more mature simply by virtue of scale and R&D budget.
Where it doesn’t fit
None of that changes who holds your data. For a healthcare provider, a public-sector team, or anyone under EU data-residency rules, “cloud-only” isn’t a feature gap you can integrate your way around — it’s a structural fact about where the database lives. Salamandr’s answer isn’t to out-feature Zendesk; it’s to make self-hosting a first-class, fully-functional option instead of an afterthought, with the same channel coverage and automation a modern support team actually uses day to day.
